Country Results

The Zambia Malaria Behavior Survey was fielded from April to May 2024, and the survey results were released in 2025. The survey was carried out by the Breakthrough ACTION project in Zambia in collaboration with the National Malaria Control Program, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), and several other local organizations.

Key behaviors at a glance

of children under five with fever had prompt and appropriate care sought for them the same or next day of fever onset

  • Knowledge: Respondents with a comprehensive knowledge of care-seeking were 3.8 times more likely to seek prompt and appropriate care for their child with fever.

  • Social Norms: Respondents who believed that people in their community sought care on the same day or the day after they developed a fever were 2.3 times more likely to seek prompt and appropriate care.

of respondents use a mosquito net every night of the week

  • Attitudes: Respondents with favorable attitudes toward the use of mosquito nets were 1.5 times more likely to report net care behaviors.

  • Media Exposure: Respondents who reported hearing malaria messages from a health facility were 1.7 times more likely to use a net every night.

of pregnant women received three or more doses of IPTp during their last pregnancy

  • Attitudes: Women with favorable attitudes toward IPTp were 3.9 times more likely to attend ANC at least four times in a future pregnancy.

  • Social Norms: Women who believed that most women in their community start ANC in the first trimester were 2.2 times more likely to start ANC early.

  • Perceptions of healthcare workers: Women who perceived that most ANC providers treat women with respect were 1.9 times more likely to intend to initiate early ANC in a future pregnancy.
